How To Count Pages for
Certified Translations

Learn how certified translation pricing works and avoid overpaying.

How Translation Companies Count Pages

Translation companies use a per-page pricing model to determine how much you need to pay for a certified translation. However, this doesn’t mean you count the total number of pages to translate and multiply it by the translation price.

This actually means that pricing is based on a standardized word-to-page conversion, not the number of physical pages in the document. In this model, 250 words equals one page. This is to ensure fair pricing.

For example, you need to translate your academic transcript, which is 500 words across two pages. You also need to translate your tax statement, which is 250 words but five pages long.

In this example, if you went strictly on the number of pages, not the word-to-page conversion, you’d end up paying more for the tax statement.

But by using the 250-word-to-page system, you get a better deal. Now, the academic transcript counts as two pages, and the tax statement counts as one.

Document Type Physical Pages Word Count Billable Pages
Academic Transcript 2 500 2
Tax Statement 5 250 1

What “Counts” as a Word?

  • Letters, articles (e.g., “a,” “the”)
  • Numbers (e.g., 12345)
  • Abbreviations
  • Stamps, headers, seals

Everything in the document is translated word-for-word and counts toward the total.

By using Word Count, we ensure you only pay for what’s actually translated; not for white space, logos, or empty pages.

How to Estimate Your Word & Page Count

Estimating the word count and converting it into the total number of pages is easy. Just take the total word count of your document and divide it by 250. That’ll give you your page count, which you can then multiply by the price of the service you selected.

But remember, certified translations are word-for-word translations. This includes all the words in your document, even what’s on headers and stamps.

Fortunately, you don’t have to waste time manually counting each word in your documents. We can easily find how many words are in your document and provide an estimate of the total cost.
